DEFINITION: Sweet potatoes are more or less like ordinary potatoes but are lots of differences between the two.The ordinary tomatoes are cultivated in large quantities and million ton are sold and eaten all over the world.In comparison, sweet potatoes are not cultivated and eaten as much as the ordinary potatoes. Sweet potatoes are generally colorful-dark light purple colour while most of the ordinary potatoes are either creamy white or white in colour. Although some light dark coloured ordinary potatoes can be found but the species are rare.
Sweet potatoes are generally cultivated in mopst tropical countries. However, sweet potatoes grown in countries like South America, are called yams. But in actual definition, sweet potatoes can never be called or regarded as yam!
Yam tubers are miles away from sweet potatoes. In west Africa, including countries like Nigeria and Ghana, yam tubers are profusely cultivated and an average yam tubers size and height range from 1- 3 feet while sweet potatoes rarely reach one feet in size and length!
