UNDERSTANDING FOLIC ACID, WHAT IT DOES, ITS HEALTH BENEFITS AND WHERE IT COMES FROM:

It is a big surprise that many people have not heard of Folic acid let alone knowing what it does and where or how it is obtained. It was a big shock to me during my researching periods of this particular vitamin. Folic acid like its brother Vitamin E does lots of good and carries lots of health benefits especially among pregnant mothers.

SINCERE RECOMMENDATION:    All female (women) over 18 should have regular intake of folic acid  vitamin  because it can help them during pregnancy. Even if they don't want to marry and become pregnant, there are still lots of health benefits they can scoop just by regular intake of this great stuff!

WHERE IS FOLATE OR FOLIC ACID OBTAINED:

Folic acid are obtained from eating dark green leafy vegetables such as Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Fluted pumpkin leaves (ugu); peas, lentils, beans, spinach; orange, strawberry, eggs, yeast and liver to mention a few.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF FOLIC ACID IN PREGNANCY:

Many pregnant mothers are ignorant of the wonderful benefits that can be derived from folate or folic acid intake during their early pregnancy. They may not be able to eat enough of these natural fruits, vegetables and poultry to meet the required dose  hence it is always advisable to take the supplements in tablets or capsules.

Folic acid or folate, is a B vitamin (B9) found mostly in dark leafy vegetables. Dr Bisoye Fagbohungbe of the National Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria, explained thus: He said, "Folic acid is a form of the B vitamin that aids in the regular celluler development and regeneration, and is especially crucial within the first weeks of your unborn baby's development" 

  He continued, "It helps to ensure proper formation of the brain and spinal cord, without which there is a higher chance of miscarriage, and a one in 1000 chance that the child will end up with a Neural Tube Disorder (NTD)".

Dr Bisoye went further and added: "Neural Tube Defects can manifest themselves as a number of different conditions upon birth, including spina bifida and anencephaly. The former, roughly meaning "Open spine" in its most severe cases can result in paralysis of the legs as well as bladder and bowel control problems. Anencephaly is a fatal condition caused by underdevelopment of the brain and skull"

I believe in the wonderful health benefits of Folic acid! You too should explore more of these benefits by reading and researching. According to new researches and studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, I quote the article thus:   "New researches have revealed that women who take folic acid supplements in early pregnancy have a 40% lower risk of having a child with Autism"

The study was carried out by a team from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and involved 85,176 children born between 2002 and 2008. The report went further, "Among  this group, 270 children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, and the researchers found that there was an inverse association between folic acid supplementation and subsequent autism risk".

The reduction in risk for autistic disorder-the most severe form-was noted in women who took folic acid from four weeks before conceiving to eight weeks after the start of the pregnancy"

Now you can see for yourself that folic acid has wonderful health benefits. You now know that you can't take such risky chances of not taking folic acid while pregnant especially when you know that folic acid can protect your unborn baby against spina bifida and other nueral tube defects in children.
