RECIPE FOR YAMS

RECIPE FOR YAMS-YAMS ARE EXCLUSIVE GIFTS TO THE IGBO PEOPLE OF NIGERIA AND THEY HAVE NOT ONLY ACCEPTED THIS EXCLUSIVE GIFTS WITH PRIDE BUT WITH HONOUR AND DIGNITY!

Our forefathers had the opinion that God in his infinite wisdom and mercy gave Yam tubers exclusively to the people of Igbo tribe in Nigeria! The Igbos accepted the gifts with pride, honour and dignity! We have so many reasons to support this claim and the reasons will be conspicuously featured as this article progresses!

When I was a little boy in Igbo land formerly Eastern part of Nigeria, as a boy of 6/7 years, my father told me during a period of famine in Nigeria then that, I quote,"No child born in Igbo land shall ever starve or die of starvation because God gave us yam tubers and to top it all, he made the yam a versatile crop!

He went on, God loves the Igbos and we are proud of our culture, our tradition, and heritage! Any child who dies in Igbo land as a result of lack of food to eat, you will know that the father of that boy is either foolish or lazy!

THE IGBO PEOPLE OF NIGERIA ARE GREAT YAM CULTIVATORS AND GREAT YAM CONSUMERS!

I have been to the Internet and I have sampled varieties of information about this root vegetable. I have seen and read about people of some nationalities who even regard sweet potatoes as yams. It is sacrilege under Igbo culture to compare yam tubers with sweet potatoes!

Of course, there are over 100 or more species of yams and I'm sure that the ones cultivated by the Igbo people are the genuine and original which was exclusively given to us! We regard yam with honour, pride and dignity because every thing we do in Igbo land, believe me, in one way or the other must have something to do with this super versatile crop!

Every Igbo man or woman cultivates yams during planting seasons and also during harvesting periods. We the Igbo people are the only tribe of people in the whole wide world who have several festivals enshrined on yam crops more than any other tribe or nation in the world!

THE MYTH SURROUNDING THE EMERGENCE OF YAM AND COCOYAM IN IGBO LAND!

As a child, I equally learned the myth surrounding the influence of "Eri, the first King of Nri kingdom. It is believed that every Nri King exudes spiritual charisma by the fact of his ancestry".

"The centrality of Nri influence in sponsoring and sustaining peace and harmony in Igbo land is very well documented by eminent scholar professor Onwujeogwu in his important work on the Nri, An Igbo Civilization: Nri Kingdom and Hegemony (1981)" It is also in the Nri kingdom and his ritual priests we learned of the sacred and myths about the origin of Igbo yams!

"The myth explained the origin and sacred nature of the yam crop and cocoyam which are staple diets of Igbo people. Yam is regarded as man's crop and cocoyam as a woman's"

"According to professor Ben Okigbo in his 1980 "Ahiajoku lecture entitled "Plant and food in Igbo culture" (13-14) stated that, I quote, "The yam crop known to botanists as Discorea Cayenensis was domesticated in Igbo land around 3,000-2,000 B.C which makes yam cultivation a very old human activity in Igbo land hence Ahiajoku or the festival associated with the yam harvest is one of the commonly shared phenomena of Igbo culture which is underlined by this foundation myth. It is by this association a very ancient communal ritual"

The professor went further, I quote, "The fact that Eze Nri's son and daughter are sacrificed to ensure the emergence of yam and cocoyam as agricultural crops links agricultural activity to the religious ritual of sacrifice. The myth introduces and validates sacrifice as the core of Igbo religion, as Cardinal Francis Arinze has shown in his seminal work on Igbo religion(Sacrifice in Igbo Religion)"

From these articles quoted, you can believe me that yams as crops were exclusively handed down to us by our ancestors and we equally give the vegetable crop the respects they deserve.
