Relaxation reduces stress,tension,depression and anxiety!
RELAXATION IS NOT ABOUT PEACE OF MIND OR ENJOYING A HOBBY, IT IS MUCH MORE THAN THESE! IT IS RATHER A PROCESS THAT DECREASES THE EFFECTS OF STRESS, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND TENSION ON YOUR MIND AND BODY!
A few days ago, I was in a telephone conversation with my West Indian friend. During that conversation, I narrated to him how my new found business venture seems to literally go hare wire. There were so much anxiety and stressful overtones in my narration and he quickly noticed this.
The next word or phrase he blurted out came like a thunder to me .."Relax, relax man!" He went on "Your life is much more than business..so relax, relax man!" As soon as he delivered those soothing but harsh advices, I suddenly calmed down.
Suddenly, I remembered an incident that happened in Nigeria when I visited home in 2009! I must share this incident with you because it was not only an eye opener but a very useful and valuable life saving warning!
It was on November 27th my relative and I visited his business partner in Aba now in Abia state. Aba hosts one of the famous international markets in Nigeria after Onitsha and Lagos!
When we arrived at the business partner's office, he complained to my relation that he has not been well and that he has been receiving some treatments from his personal medical doctor.
Suddenly, with his face beaming with faked smiles, he shrieked "Nna, did you hear what the doctor told me...ee..?" He jested, "The doctor said I should take two weeks off to relax!" He went on, "Me, Chief Okeosisi take two weeks off for relaxation?" This is absurd, incredible, stupid and out of tune! Ican't do that!" If I take two weeks off to relax, what will happen to my business?" I, tell you, this Doctor, have earned so much money from me and I think it is time I sack him and find another doctor! Yes, I'll definitely sack him if he again dare ask me to take some days off for relaxation. It seems he doen't realise that we business men have no time for all that cock and bull story about relaxation!" "Time means money, besides, I don't trust some of my staff!"he finally yelled.
After listening to his tirades, my relation and I advised him not only to listen but take the doctor's advice. When I told him that in the western world including UK where I live that people regard relaxation as part of life saving devise, he laughed at my statement and once again screamed "That is UK and London and America...This is Nigeria you know!" "Me, Chief Okeosisi will never take two weeks off for relaxation..!" If he had said one week, well, it is better but for 2 weeks, I will never do such a thing!"
When I finally reminded him about his High blood pressure which may be the reason the doctor suggested he should have 2 weeks off, he blurted out.."High blood pressure doesn't kill we Nigerians, all you need is a good doctor and pay him well...ha.. ha!" he chuckled with laughter and my relation and I left his office.
One week later, my relation called me on the phone and told me that "Chief Okeosisi, Ome-mgboji one" has dead!" He collapsed in his office and died before they could rush him to hospital.
This is a sad story! Nigerians call people like Chief Okeosisi "Money miss Road!" Relaxation is an integral part of life and as essential to our lives as much as foods and drinks! We learn from experiences as it has always been the best teacher! If Chief Okeosisi had taken the doctor's advice, perhaps he would have lived longer. To collapse and die in his office is scary!
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO RELAX AND THERE ARE EQUALLY MANY BENEFITS TO BE DERIVED FROM RELAXATION!
There are many ways to relax. For example, stamp collecting and antique collecting are some of the oldest ways of relaxing. If you are a stamp collector, and you feel stressed, depressed, just bring out your stamp albums as you navigate from one stamp to the other, before you know it, your stress and depression have evaporated into the thin air! I'm a stamp collector and I know what I'm talking about!
If that is not enough, bring out your old photographic albums and start to go through the old faces you use to know and the memories of the places and time you took the photos. This is one of the ways you can add positive mental attitude into your mind and this is called "Bathing yourself in the happy memories of the past!"
Apart from hobbies, there several games,music,reading,exercises created to help you relax. For me relaxation music knocks me home and I feel attuned to the infinite, reach the stars and back to earth!
When faced with pains,sadness,stress,anxiety,depression,death of loved ones,business failure,take time, yes, take time to relax man!
