Children and healthy eating promote healthy adulthood!
CHILDREN AND HEALTHY EATING PROMOTE NOT ONLY HEALTHY ADULTHOOD BUT PREVENTS OBESITY.
Healthy eating habits are one of the most important thing a growing child should adopt. The greatest present parents and the Government can give to a growing child or children is to help them develop healthy eating habits!
It is said that good nutrition is the bedrock of lifelong health, and it begins in infancy. Healthy eating has the tendency to stabilize children's energy, sharpen their minds, and even out their moods.
It is equally a universal truth that by encouraging a child's healthy eating habits now, we can make a huge impact on the child's life long relationship with food and given them the best opportunity to grow into healthy, confident adults!
When I'm writing an article such as this, I'm not only writing about Nigerian children and their eating habits. In fact, I am writing about the children healthy eating habits of all nationalities or about children all over the world!
Healthy eating habits seem to be foreign in a country like Nigeria. Who wants to eat healthy food or diet anyway? This will be the question an average Nigerian child growing up in the Nigerian village will ask. For example, we know that children who eat breakfast always do better than their mates who don't. Eating breakfast in the rural areas of Nigeria is rarely achieved.
In the cities, the parents of growing up children can afford to give them breakfast,such as tea, bread and egg or Akamu, Akara balls with chocolate drinks but this is not possible in the villages. A growing up school (child) in the village has no choice of healthy or unhealthy breakfast.
What he can find in form of food is what he can eat and if there is nothing to eat, he has to go to school with empty stomach. Those who can find Akpu or eba garri with soup to eat it with should rather thank their lucky stars!
It is a hard life! I did it during my school days and many children are still doing it right now. I mean going to schools without breakfast! There is no food agency, council or government looking into such situation let alone recommend healthy diets or foods!
CHILDREN GROWING UP IN THE THIRD WORLD OR UNDEVELOPED COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD ARE AT GREAT DISADVANTAGE WHEN WE TALK ABOUT HEALTHY EATING.
In all these countries in the third world, children are not encouraged to eat healthy food. In spite of the facts that they comparatively grow organic foods, fruits and vegetables, but no government goes into the rural areas or villages to advice parents on what to give to their growing up children. It is a rather an unwritten policy of Parents and children to eat whatever they can see and afford not caring whether it is healthy or unhealthy.
The good thing about the children growing up in the rural areas of Nigeria is the fact that many of them have not heard of obesity which is the scourge of the western world. I have always said that poverty is sometimes a blessing in disguise! This is true, because 85% of school children in the rural areas of Nigeria are slim-fit! It is only in the cities you can find a few children who look chubby and obese and they are the children of rich people!
ALL NATIONS OF THE WORLD OUGHT TO TAKE EXAMPLE FROM CANADA AND UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHO HAVE TAKEN THE PAINS TO HAVE IMPRESSIVE NUTRITIONAL HEALTHY EATING GUIDELINES FOR THEIR PEOPLE BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS.
I'm excited about Canada and their Nutritional guidelines. I'm convinced that their policies on healthy eating is not only better but greater than those of some European and African countries!

I quote, "Safe food and good nutrition are important to Canadians and maintaining the safety of Canada food supply is a shared responsibility among government, industry and consumers! They maintain that eating a nutritious and balanced diet is one of the best ways to protect and promote good health!"
Canada has well documented and should I say, mouth-watering,and juicy creative food and healthy eating designs for their people including the children.
Canada has wonderful innovations such as "THE EAT WELL AND BE ACTIVE EDUCATIONAL TOOLKIT"
This Toolkit is designed to help those who teach groups of children and adults about healthy eating and physical activity, and encourage individuals to take action to maintain and improve their health" Toolkit is a joint collaboration between Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada.
In addition, the Government provide "Eat well and be Active Every day poster with 24, and 54 healthy eating and physical activity images. These posters are educational posters aimed to promote eating well and being physically active to both children and adults.
The Canadians have literally, left no healthy eating stones uncovered! "HEALTH CANADA" is responsible for the establishment of policies, setting standards, and providing advices and information on the safety and nutritional values of food.
"Health Canada" recognizes the important role healthy eating plays in promoting the health of children and youth and as a result, several healthy schemes and policies, and guidelines had been developed to support these progammes. I hope that this article will induce many European and African countries to go and learn from the Canadians on the importance of healthy eating for the growing up children and adults.
